Want to get rid of your writer’s block quickly?
That beautiful enlightened moment when ideas stream through your mind in bright electric blasts of colour and imagination, your mind feels expanded, you’re excited beyond words and you can taste your dream. You sit down at your computer and your fingers cannot keep up with the words that need to urgently jump out of your mind onto the screen. You know that you need to immediately capture this idea because it is utterly brilliant.
You read over your words and you’re in amazement with yourself, you think to yourself “Did I really write this? This is brilliant”. These precious moments of writer’s rapture, we live for these moments and they are indeed our best writings. If only it would be this way all the time, truth is, even the best writer’s get writer’s block, you just need to find ways to smash through the wall.
You must set the stage for your muse to show up, you cannot always rely on her showing up first thing in the morning when you’re ready to write…you have to lure her out – No, it isn’t as easy as dangling a picture of Hugh Jackman in front of her….please, she needs more than just a fleeting moment of passion.
See below the 7 ways to overcome writer’s block (it will work every time).
Clean your home and the area where you’ll be working!
It is so important to work in a space that is fresh, inviting and welcoming for your muse to come out and play. If you’re one of those people who works better in clutter than so be it, however, if you’re a woman like me and the thought of eating dinner while the kitchen is turned inside out freaks you out; then this is for you sister.
Enjoy the process, put on some Sia, Mumford & Sons or whatever your music flavour to swing those hips while dusting and vacuuming. I always need an incentive at the end of my time in jail, oh I mean cleaning, so after I clean I light candles, cut flowers from my garden and open all the windows! An OCD’s haven right there.
Bring out your muse….
Everyone’s muse will come out from different experiences, she may come out whilst walking through nature, whilst listening to your favourite speaker, reading 1 line of poetry or after a sweat session at the gym.
My own darling muse will come out whilst listening to a 10 minute master class from Carrie Green, whilst listening to Danielle Laporte’s Fire Starter Sessions or a YouTube Motivational video by Les Brown. She is awakened and ready to teach with fierce empowered girl boss power! Once I bring her out she needs the stage to soar.
Don’t stop to edit.
This next statement is going to piss off the A Type Personality Sister’s here, but first here me out…then decide. Whilst writing don’t stop to edit each incorrectly spelt word or to format, it will break the flow and not allow the continuation of magical ideas to flourish.
When you have poured your soul and wisdom onto the screen then go back and edit, format, add in funny sayings and make it come alive. Again, give yourself an incentive to finish your masterpiece. I love creating beautiful Canva images to go along with my writing piece, this is my chance to get even more creative and I love looking at the finished product. 🙂
Turn off all distractions.
Ok, I feel a pout coming on from you….I want you to turn off Facebook, your email notifications and Instagram…YES! Facebook can waste valuable time, however, this is not just about distractions, it is about the comparisons that may come from your news feed. My muse cannot come fully out while I am comparing what someone else is achieving, how much they are making and their ideas that could distract my ideas.
Dive deep into your zen, your genius and let her come alive with original beauty and freedom!Turn it all off and allow your muse to set up camp for as long as she needs, she will shy away if you start making comparisons (she’s the jealous type and knows that she is the greatest). She is telling you that she is enough for you and will deliver magic if only you will give her the opportunity.
Take soul breaks.
I love, love, love walking away from my computer and stretching or having a cuddle with my favourite soul in the world; my dog Charlotte. I also love going for a walk outside and letting the sun kiss my face.
When you remove yourself from your desk you will gain clarity, better ideas and a different
view-point. Try it.
Make your space a place of majesty.
I like to play gorgeous uplifting music to get me in the flow. The white noise allows me to not get distracted and certain beats actually make me type faster and stay alert to the task at hand.
I pour water into a big glass with lemon and ice so that my brain and body is well hydrated.
You can percolate coffee or pour a pot of tea, if you take milk and sugar you can have a pretty little milk jug and a small bowl for your sugar so that you do not need to keep getting up from your desk. Open the window and let the fresh air fill your lungs and give you precious life. Light some candles….ahhhh say no more!
Set the egg timer.
On my most challenging writing days I need to sit down and free write with a timer. The timer will be longer than an egg timer 🙂 I will set it for about 20 mins. During this time I may come up with the skeleton of what I want to write, create headings or dive straight into writing. After 20 mins I will remove myself from the desk for a slight break then revisit my writing for another timed structure.
This timed outburst of free writing removes pressure that you need to be glued to your desk for 8 hours to come up with something. It allows you to jam out structured periods and then you have the incentive of breaks to reward yourself. Your mind will feel more enlightened and looser to explore.
- Make a list of topics you would like to blog about. Come up with various ideas and write them into your smart phone so that you can quickly jot down more ideas where ever you are.
- Set aside a writing day and make your space lovely for her to join you. Get organised and have everything you need ready and available to limit procrastination and distraction.
- Make it happen, instead of thinking about how amazing you want your business to be, start writing and teaching. You can make your business a success!
Just decide then BEGIN!Let me know how you went with the task in the comments below. I would love to hear how this challenged you and what you achieved.
